Changing of the Guard ::: Work Horses eventually wear out

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

It has never been better said:

"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;

A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace; and a time to refrain from embracing;

A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace."        (ECCLESIASTES)

EVERYTHING CHANGES, AND YET THE CYCLE OF INFINITE TOIL WHICH CHARACTERIZES THE UNIVERSE CONTINUES. THEREFORE, FROM TIME TO TIME, A CHANGING OF THE GUARD IS ESSENTIAL. Fresh troops take the place of the old, the sick, the weary, the burned-out, the otherwise occupied. And the Universe goes on. From galaxies to neighborhoods, time works its magic and demands change. Individuals are called to transcend the usual, and to ascend to greater roles.

Not every role is worthy of a new advocate. Some are. That determination is up to each individual, who can only respond based upon his/her own enlightened self-interest. Desire and enthusiasm are the touchstones.

The disappearance of which Neighborhood traditions would personally grieve you? Those are the ones you are called to support at this time of the changing of the guard. The Old Guard has carried on as long as possible. Without a New Guard, traditions will fade.  Some of those traditions probably should  fade. Other traditions are worth fresh investment.  ~  This sweeping prologue finally leads to specifics:

Is anyone willing to invest in a continuation of the annual Southside Historic House Tour? Or has its time passed?

Is anyone willing to invest in the biennial Tree Streets Garden Tour? Or has its time passed?

Is anyone willing to invest in summertime Music in Veterans' Park? Or has its time passed?

Is anyone willing to represent the Southside Neighborhood at City meetings such as

Seniors & Law Enforcement Together,

Keep JC Beautiful (a Solid Waste endeavor),

Weed & Seed ( a Police endeavor to eradicate neighborhood crime),

Livable Communities (gives grants to neighborhoods),

Planning Commission (oversees rezonings),

Board of Dwelling Standards (addresses derelict properties),

Park and Rec, etc.?   ~  Or have these passed into irrelevance? The world of cyber-activities, individual pursuits, and the middle-class-crunch has undoubtedly rearranged priorities.

I myself have no answers to the above. Nor do I have any major concern about the outcome. I am merely attempting to present the relevant questions to the Neighborhood as a whole. Whatever the decision, I will cheerfully deal with it. Provide me with your guidance and enthusiasm, and I will follow :

How  insulting can you be to all the hard volunteer work that has been done over the years by these "Work Horses" and how insulting to insert a photograph?

 The erratic font,color, and subject change makes this extremely difficult to read.

If you are recruiting volunteers and ideas please be professional, succinct and to the point. Then someone may take the organization seriously. Any correspondence in regards to SNO should be handled like meetings, orderly and professionally.

Hey now, Sarah Lisa, that photo is of ME! Can't you tell us work horses apart?? The bangles and red tassels are a dead giveaway!!!!

OK, enough laughter.  In response to your inquiry :  I'm NOT recruiting volunteers or ideas. I AM asking whether a critical number of SNO members are sufficiently interested in some of the traditional activities to present proposals for continuation of those activities and events. Whatever the membership decides is fine with me. In an organization like SNO, all priorities must be decided by the grassroots. The priorities of the officers is basically irrelevant.  The role of the officers, including me, is to expedite implementation of the will of all 90 member-households, speaking more or less on behalf of the 3300 Neighborhood residents.

I enthusiastically urge you and all others to crystallize and to present your own personal priorities (backed up with your own personal dedication of [wo]manpower) at any and every regular monthly meeting.  As dynamic as you seem to be, I might enjoy being yoked to a plow alongside you!

Best wishes plus admiration for your willingness to express yourself,

MacBryan (a.k.a., "one of the work horses")(photo below)

No McBryan the resemblance was not missed.

Self deprecation isn't always funny.

Your position as President of the organization is to lead and guide along with your fellow officers.

As for my "crystallization" the last time I attended a meeting all I encountered was boorish behavior and embarrassment for the "one" new member I brought. I remember you told them. "Just because you come to one meeting does not give you an opinion."  But..... if you come to one meeting you get a vote?....

And keeping with my non attendance if you knew me which you don't, you would know I have been physically unable to attend.

And as far as volunteering in the community and your attempt at discrediting my lack of giving back, I will point out again,  You obviously don't know me. My local community  involvement up until July of last year is something I am very proud of.

So please don't imply or infer my not caring, giving back, paying it forward, etc because I cannot or do not attend the meetings.

There are several members out there that work odd shifts,take care of small children,single mothers/dads. Everyone's circumstances are different and their opinions are just as valuable.

Which brings me back to the original reason for response.

.As the elected representative for SNO I would like to see a littler more professionalism in postings,newsletters, emails. Less "tongue in cheek" rhetoric. It smacks of a personal agenda.

Lisa

Thank you, Lisa, for giving me a laugh. You are a firecracker. Want to be pen pals?

Seriously -- you've read way too much into my reply. I mean exactly what I said : You seem to be a high energy grassroots member whose point of view and assistance would prove a blessing to the organization.

Your memory of my response to your friend/neighbor on that difficult night is inaccurate. I have double-checked with others and confirmed that my exact words were, "You can't just show up the first time and hijack the entire meeting."  However, your friend and I had a rather pleasant interaction afterwards, and I would be delighted to welcome her (and you) to any and every meeting, and to make sure that each of you receives ample opportunity to present your specific proposals for constructive action.

Hope to see you soon,

MacBryan
